REVIEW & SWATCHES: Gigi Hadid X Maybelline Eyeshadow Palettes

Good evening beauty fam! Is everyone getting excited for Christmas?? It’s right around the corner! You might be getting gifts for friends, family and even yourself. And you may have been eyeing the new Gigi Hadid X Maybelline collection that recently launched in our local drugstores. I was super keen to get my hands on a few products but after having a look at them in person I decided to only get the eyeshadows. I didn’t really like any of the colours from the lipstick range and I didn’t like the Jetsetter palette (wasn’t going to use the concealers or lip colours in the palette). But I didn’t want to walk away with nothing so instead I took home the Gigi Hadid Eyeshadow Palette in Warm (6 eyeshadows) and the Gigi Hadid Eye Contour Palette also in Warm (5 eyeshadows).

The Packaging

Both palettes come with 5-6 shadows which have resulted in very small and compact packaging. I’m not complaining though! I quite enjoy how cute and travel friendly these are. The Eye Contour Palette comes in a matte, cardboard compact…similar to the LORAC Pro Palette and Colourpop Palette packaging, which I prefer. The Eyeshadow Palette, on the other hand, comes in a plastic casing. Both feel really light weight and travel friendly, however, I feel like the plastic one would snap if I dropped it. Other than that I loveeeeee the peachy/pastel/nude colour scheme going on. It’s super cute the colours themselves are going to be super wearable for the spring/summer!

The Product

Okay, keep in mind that at the end of the day these are Maybelline eyeshadows but marketed under Gigi’s name. I haven’t personally worn Maybelline’s eyeshadows before but I have swatched them and I can’t say I was impressed. I’ve originally swatched The Nudes Palette and I found that the shadows were quite dry and applied patchy. The shadows in the Eye Contour Palette are of matte finishes and applied smooth but were not very pigmented. With one swipe I felt that the colour just disappeared into my arm. It took about 2-3 layers of swatches for me to get full opacity. As for the Eyeshadow Palette, the shimmer shades swatch very well. With one swipe I get some decent pigmentation and it applies nicely. But the matte shades in this palette applied patchy and felt a little chalky.

The Performance

Funnily enough the eyeshadows applied really well on the eyes unlike how they swatches. I used regular eyeshadow brushes to apply and I found that I got pretty good pigmentation and didn’t really notice any patchiness or chalkiness. But then again I did use foundation and my Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion underneath which may have made a difference. I still had to layer on the eyeshadows to get better opacity but for the most part I didn’t have any issues with application. The pinkier shades in the Eyeshadow Palette came out a little more bronze-y than pink. I wasn’t disappointed but caught me a little off guard as I was hoping to achieve a pinky/peach eyeshadow look.

The Look

So I played around with the palettes and created the look above! I used the two lighter shades in the Eye Contour Palette as a base for my eyeshadow. Then I went into the Eyeshadow Palette and used the shimmer pink mixed with the gold and focused this on the centre of the lids. Then I mixed the darkest shades from both palettes and worked this into my outer V and crease to create some depth and definition. I ended up with a pretty nice bronze-y look which I was really digging. And if you’re wondering what that highlight was, it’s the BYS Highlighter Trio…best budget highlighter ever!

So what are my final thoughts? Are they worth it? No. Sorry Gigi but for nearly $25 per palette it’s not worth the money. The quality just isn’t where I want it to be. I definitely feel Colourpop have the superior quality in eyeshadows amongst most brands. But these just didn’t cut it for me. I was still about to work with them but when you’re paying close to $25, you don’t want to have to make the eyeshadow work, it should already be of optimal quality. So despite the hype around the launch, the product itself was just not what I was hoping for. But then again it is just Maybelline’s eyeshadows packaged and marketed under Gigi’s name.

Did anyone else buy anything from the collection? Let me know what you think of the collection in the comments below, I’d love to hear your thoughts! I have a few Christmas and New Year looks coming your way so stay tuned! I’ll see you all next week! xx

  1. This was very helpful. After seeing photos online I was thinking of picking up one of these palettes but now I don’t think I will. It would really annoy me if I had to put on a few coats to get some colour. I usually use Too Faced or Urban Decay eyeshadow so I probably wouldn’t have the patience for these.
